New Therapies for Osteoporosis Management

New medicines promote bone growth

People with osteoporosis now can consider newer medicines to help them deal with the bone disease.

One of the newest is Romosozumab (sold as Evenity). This bone-building medicine is given as an injection every month at your doctor's office for a year.

Harvard Medical School also notes two other relatively new medical therapies for osteoporosis management:

• Teriparatide (sold as Bonsity and Forteo). Similar to parathyroid hormone, it stimulates new bone growth. It's given by daily injection under the skin for up to two years.

• Abaloparatide (sold as Tymlos). This also is similar to parathyroid hormone and can be taken for only two years.

These medicines are part of a welcome trend, as the National Spine Health Foundation noted.

“Fortunately, over the past two decades there has been great progress with numerous new medications developed that have dramatically improved the ability of health care professionals to successfully treat osteoporosis, resulting in a decreased chance of suffering an osteoporotic bone fracture.”

For women

Romosozumab (Evenity) inhibits sclerostin, which is an enemy of bone growth. It helps to create bone growth and may reduce bone resorption, too.

The Food and Drug Administration approved Romosozumab to treat osteoporosis in women who have completed menopause and are at high risk for fracture. It is injected once a month, but should be stopped after one year because its effectiveness fades then, the foundation said.
