Genetic study to help rheumatology

More medical help is in the works for people who suffer from rheumatology.

“Precision medicine” blends analyses of genetic, molecular and environmental factors to develop personalized approaches to diagnosis, treatment and management of a patient’s rheumatology.

The goal is to determine which approach will work best for the patient, given his or her lifestyle, as well as genetic and environmental traits.

Precision medicine is important for patients whose rheumatology resists treatment. It uses therapies derived from the molecular characteristics of the patient. Molecularly-informed treatment has been used successfully for some cancer patients and authorities believe this method will work for rheumatology patients, who suffer from inflammation and damage to their joints, skin and other organs.

Drug aspect

Precision medicine includes the field of pharmacogenomics, which examines how drugs and genes interact. It combines pharmacology, which is the science of drugs, with genomics, which studies genes and their functions.
